I have a family I love fiercely. Stephen,Lulani, Hugh they are mywhole world and I would do anything for them. But I've alsolearned, over many years, that I need this too. The solo walk. The golden hour. Just me, my camera, and a fluffy dog who paddles through the shallows without once askingme to hurry up.
He's the perfect companion for it, honestly. He doesn't interrupt the light. He doesn't need me toexplain why I've stopped mid-stride to watch the way wet sand mirrors a sunset. He justis, rightalongside me, doing his own thing while Ido mine.
That's not stepping away from the people I love. That's how I come back to them whole.
March through July is my favourite time of year on the Adelaide coast. Give me a cloudy, moody, dramatic sky over a clear one any day. The colours are richer, the light is softer, the world feels quietersomehow. I can sit at the water's edge for hours watching the light shift, listening to the waves, justbreathing.
It gives me joy. It gives me inner peace. It gives me a way to step away from the noise of everyday lifeand remember what actually matters.
Twenty-five years of teaching. A brain that moves fast and sees everything. A life full of people andpurpose and beautiful, wonderful chaos. The beach is where I put it all down for a little while.
I've been taking photos since I was twelve years old. Back then I couldn't have told you why I justknew I needed to. Now I understand it completely. Photography is how I process the world. Thebeauty, the stillness, the small details most people walk straight past.
That little wading bird in the shallows? Most people wouldn't have seen it. I did. Because I waspresent. Because I wasthere, not just physically but fully eyes open, heart open, camera ready.
That's what this photo is, really. It's not just a dog on abeach at sunset.
It's my dog. My beach. My light. My peace. My life the one I've built, the one I protect, and the one I'mgrateful for every single time I pull on my shoes and head down to the water's edge.
West Beach, South Australia. Golden hour. My happy place.
